Body warmth, eye contact and attention let the feeding be a comfortable experience for the little ones. In today’s article Isis Maternity will give you some helpful hints for feeding your little one with the baby bottle.
The right posture is important
While feeding your child with the baby bottle it is the best to sit down in a comfortable chair with armrest or in a sofa corner and carry the baby sitting in the arm. With a footrest it will be more comfortable. The head of your child should rest in the crook of the arm. Babies like to have free hands so that they can grasp the baby bottle own their own. Very important is also the eye contact while feeding with the baby bottle – your little one would like to share the moment with you. While your child is being fed with the bottle, it also wants to snuggle with you and feel your body warmth.
The nipple must be right
Drinking out of a baby bottle is for babies less stressful than being fed by breast. The conditions should be similar between both as babies love to suckle. Therefore the shape of the nipple and the size of the hole is important for feeding with a baby bottle. It should only be so big that some drops per second can come out of the downwards kept bottle. A too big hole in the nipple leads to the problem that the baby drinks too fast and therefore swallows a lot of air.
Duration and amount of meals is determined by your child
In general babies can be fed by baby bottles in 10 to 15 minutes. More impatient toddlers might be faster but swallow more air as well. As a rule of thumb a baby bottle meal should not be longer than breastfeeding. If you can interrupt the meal without big yelling, burpingis here and there pretty good. The necessary amount of drinking can be very different from baby to baby. According to the age there can be 4 to 6 baby bottles a day.
When your baby is growing well and feels comfortable don’t push the baby to drink more. Consider that hunger is not the only cause why babies are yelling and grizzling. Very often they are just looking for physical warmth and occupation.
